Inspiration comes in waves, and for me, a wave has not come crashing down in quite some time. To be fair, we’ve been pretty busy over the past six months — traveling, spending time with friends & family, and ya know, getting engaged and planning a wedding — so my hobbies, my me time, this blog have all fallen to the wayside. And to be honest? That’s totally okay.
Sometimes life happens, and it’s not blog-worthy or Instagrammable. Sometimes life happens and it is blog-worthy and Instagrammable, but you’re too busy soaking it up to worry about sharing it publicly. Our past six months have been a little bit of both.
But now I feel like life is slowing down ever-so-slightly, and I’m feeling reinvigorated — so much so that I wanted to reinvigorate this space, too. I wanted this to be a clean, fresh and user-friendly space – one where I would enjoy coming, and hopefully you would, too. More importantly, I wanted my blog to have a name.
Well and Cheaply.
My inspiration for this name came from a line in the great Hemingway classic, A Moveable Feast. As you likely know, Hemingway has always been one of my favorite authors because he writes straightforwardly with no lofty words or higher planes of thought. In this memoir, he writes about his time as a struggling young expatriate journalist and writer in Paris in the 1920s, somehow making me yearn for that exact lifestyle, despite the fact that I’ve never been a writer, I’ve never seen the 1920s and I’ve only spent a week in Paris. Yet when I first read it, I wanted to throw everything away and jet across an ocean to eat very little and drink a lot and spend my days writing furiously in a Parisian café. I longed for another time altogether — especially a time when I could spend my time with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald or Gertrude Stein.
But of the whole book, the line that stuck with me most was this:
We ate well and cheaply and drank well and cheaply and slept well and warm together and loved each other.
— Ernest Hemingway
And for some reason, no sentence has ever rung so true or summarized my life so completely. I’m currently living a life full of eating and drinking well and cheaply and sleeping well and warm. As for loving? Kindly refer back to My Funny Valentine for evidence of that.
So, I’d like to be the first to officially welcome you to Well and Cheaply, a blog about eating, drinking and living, inspired by Hemingway.
